Labor shortage is a serious issue for the newly established Space settlements. Different solutions are presented by different societies. However, around the turn of the 22nd century most Spacers have settled for robots and automation as the way to solve this problem.
There is one big exception: the Settlement of Satelliteland. Here colonists have turned to genetic engineering to create a species of servile humanoid beings, called Humanoid Synthetic Organisms or HSOs.
