She was adopted because her biological parents had died in a car crash and none of her family could look after her.

Patricia and Jerry, Malia's adoptive parents, had decided that she would go on tour with Ally. They thought this was a good idea because lately, she has been depressed and they thought that maybe having a friendship with the other girls of Fifth Harmony could help.

Malia has been depressed because it's getting close to the date of her parent's death. Her parents had died on the 29th of February.
