Betty Cooper is the new girl who is abused by her parents, and only has three friends; Reggie Mantle, Fangs Fogarity, and Toni Topaz. They're the only ones that understand her. They are all a very tight group that stick together no matter what. Fangs and Toni both agree that Betty needs a boy in her life. So Betty tells Jughead Jones, a loner, to meet Betty at Pops, they say the same to Betty. Jughead quickly develops feelings for Betty. Betty has other problems to deal with. Her parents are kicking her out. She is invited to live with Reggie, which makes Jughead hate him. Reggie also secretly has feelings for Betty, which starts a classic fight, "Who will get the girl?"

In a taunting voice, Reggie added, "Gee, Betty, it must be hard having a crush on some loner who doesn't even like girls." Betty raised her eyebrows, wordlessly commanding him to leave. "Did you hear me, Goldilocks?" "Oh I heard you, I just don't care. Time for you to leave, Reggie, you're not getting anywhere with me." On the outside, Betty Cooper was the perfect girl. A straight A student, sweet and kind, a play-by-the-rules kind of girl. Archie Andrews was her next door neighbor and best friend, athletically inclined, and though somewhat lacking in intellect, he was sincere and devoted. They were the epitome of the perfect couple, and everyone couldn't help but believe that Archie and Betty, young though they were, would someday end up together. But in this group there was another friend, Jughead Jones, a cynical, sardonic aspiring writer. He didn't always feel like he fit it with Betty and Archie. But somehow, he felt like he belonged with them, though he couldn't place why.
