Sadie Raines, a closeted lesbian cheerleader, befriends Alex Druman, a closeted gay boy in her class. When Sadie kisses a girl at a party and rumors start to spread, her and Alex make a deal to pretend to date each other until they graduate to keep their Christian community and homophobic parents from finding out their secret. But when Alex gets tired of hiding, he commits suicide, leaving Sadie a letter asking her to tell everyone the truth. Her junior year is the hardest of her life, learning to love herself while piecing herself back together from the tragic death of one of her closest friends.
