"What do you want from me?" He asks, suddenly chill again. "I want to make you happy, but I don't know how, goddamn it." His voice is thick with emotion by the end of the sentence but the words were quiet because, while I wasn't looking, he had joined me on the edge. His breath fanned my lips and my hands unconsciously gripped his black trench coat. I closed my eyes and breathed in, catching the unmistakable scent of his cologne.
"All I ever wanted was an apology, Nicolas. Just an apology." I gave him one last chance to say something. But nothing came. Smiling I looked up at him, and released my hold on his coat.
"Well, it's been real Mr. Mafia Man. Catch you on the flip side."
And, ever so slightly tipping back, I let myself fall.
