But, her father, Thranduíl has other plans. Unite his kingdom with the newly reestablished kingdom of Erebor and use the power of both to defeat the orcs. An arranged marriage that neither side wants, but both sides need. But what happens when the two sides realize that maybe-just maybe-being together isn't quite as bad as they'd thought...

Calm The Fire by Inconvenient_Ideal

It is a little known fact that Thorin had come to dislike the race of elves; but perhaps it hasn't always been this way, maybe, just maybe, once upon a time there wasn't such high disdain held towards them. The dwarf-Prince's heart isn't as nearly as impenetrable as the vaults of Erebor, a chance find and visit cause a form to grow between two races. If anything the elf-Princess's curiosity about everything, and anything which involved or was created by the hand of dwarf's in turn piques his own curiosity, not finding how something so delicate could find fondness in things so hardened. Regardless, a love formed, two pieces complete only to split thanks to a dragon's attack of the jealousy of what Erebor had within.

That changes when she embarks on a quest with her adoptive kin to reclaim their homeland. The bonds with her adoptive family will be tested, but none more so than the one with her adoptive father: Thorin Oakenshield. His disdain towards her kin begins to push her away from him and create doubt within her - that is until people try to separate her from him. That is not the only bond that changes, there is another that has been changing long before the quest started: The bond Lessrien shares with Kili. Although he's survived the wounds he received at the end of Azog's blade, his recovery is far from complete. When she's asked to help the dwarves tend to their wounded, medical student Jasna Stoneham reluctantly agrees. Not only is she only just barely a qualified to even set foot in the infirmary, but she stutters when she gets nervous and nervous does not even begin to describe how she's feeling. To make matters worse, no one thought to warn her that she would be caring for the king himself, Thorin Oakenshield. Unfortunately, the road to recovery isn't necessarily a smooth one, but if there's one thing Thorin will learn, it's that what Jasna lacks in experience and training, she makes up for in stubbornness, giving him a run for his money. And for every backwards step he takes, she is there to push him three steps forward. And Jasna will soon find out that there is a gentle, softer side to the dwarf king, one that very few people have ever seen and one he fights to keep hidden from her as well. But like his recovery, that is also easier said than done.

She winced slightly under the dwarves's gazes, feeling the heavy wight of Thorin's glare resting on her shoulders. She felt several stares traveling over the scar running from her left temple to her jawbone and shuddered as they came to rest on the mark beneath her jawbone. She is a Guardian, a dragon keeper, and she was responsible for Smaug's escape from his chains and the fall of Erebor. Raine joins the Company upon Gandalf the Grey's insistance that she would find redemption, but then the Dwarves find out about her past. Will they be as forgiving and understanding as the wandering Wizard is? Or will the bonds she formed with them overcome her past? But more importantly, will Thorin forgive her for damning his people? Maybe he'll allow Smaug one small victory before they reclaim Erebor...
