She inhaled in shock and suddenly felt herself fall to the ground. He laughed, ecstatic that it was over; all his pain and agony and confusion were finally over. She clenched the rug in her fists, trying to keep herself on the ground. Bewildered, she felt a liquid emerge from and then drip off of her face.
