Although the infection can be removed through surgery, the feelings associated with the love also fade away along with the flowers. In the same vein, Lance McClain accidentally develops a crush on his fellow team mate named Keith. This crush leads to a disease, where he experiences a simultaneous mix of love and hatred for the color red. The roses become both a source of pain and solitude for him.
