"Millicent, the future Queen and Lord of Fey." She clutched her child placing cracked lips on soft curls, heart swelling with pride at her strong heir, but once again dimmed at the reality. She had but a moment before her love would be stripped away and replaced with a fake. An insignificant magicless human boy was stolen from the clutches of his mother and replaced by her own mystical superior daughter.
The trees whispered sin and secrets when the news came, the mother tree opened her barking gap, "The news is true my lord, the king had turned to the shadow, The Shade. The heir is no longer safe in this realm; we must begin the changeling." The small being cradled in her mother's arms gazed with an intensity, a curiosity, that was unknown in newborns. She was special, a fey, a queen, and lord sentenced to live in a mundane human world.
The queen handed her child over to the mothering tree, the connection between the human world and the fey. Branches encircled the child until she could no longer be seen and when they unraveled the fey girl was gone. A human boy with weak limbs, pale blue eyes, and lifeless silver hair, was left screaming for a teat to suckle. The queen's love was replaced with hatred for this insignificant being that was to stand in for her perfect daughter. He was weak and greedy.
"His name is Mallory, fated unfortunate." The safety of her daughter trumped sadness, this way he will never reach her, her father, the queen's lover.
Switched at birth to hid her royal identity, Millicent grows up in the South during the 1940's with a pair of mundane parents and a spunky best friend, but when a mysterious girl arrives, Millicent begins to question her reality and more importantly her humanity. Strange magic, mystical realms, and heart-wrenching situations await her, but the real question is, who is she?
