Elle Walker is just like any other high school student. Well - except for the witchcraft. Still, there are some upsides - the ability to duck out of classes and into a completely different world, for instance. Elle has tied a doorway to the mystical world of Addirion to the back of her locker for easy access on the worst days. It was never a problem . . . until a chance accident sucks two of her classmates through the door, and she has to go diving after them.
With her secret exposed, Elle's pretty sure things can't get much worse, until the boys have the bright idea to research their group history project by taking a road trip around Addirion. Before she can convince them it's all been just some weird dream all three are swept away by adventure, danger, and the unknowns of the world stretching before them. Well, what's a girl to do when there's a shadowy sorcerer threatening to destroy her world while the friends she never asked for fight over which of them has the best chance to date her?
