A short story about a girl who gains confidence after her father's tragic death

It's 1943 and the United States is deep into WWII. While Milanne's father visits from war, he and his daughter get in an argument after which he leaves angrily and gets in a car accident. This forces Milanne and her mother to leave the only home they've ever known and move to the Deep South, where the rest of their family is.
Upon entering the South, Milanne is shocked to learn that her mother is taking in a Jewish refugee with a dark past. Along with all the changes in her life, Milanne suffers from more discrimination than she ever dealt with up North and spirals into a dark haven of self conciousness, shame, anger and depression.
The only thing that keeps her from falling completely is the forbidden love she forms with that of the Jewish refugee, Derrick.
