One Christmas eve, the wealthy citizens of Englefield all receive the same invitation to a ball being held by a mysterious nobleman only known as "A Man of the Worlds." Nobody knows who this man is, and all eagerly attend to simply know and meet him. In the midst of dances and music, as they wait for his much anticipated revelation, the young and curious Amelia Gahill and her little brother David take it upon themselves to discover the man's identity. As they do so, they encounter people that seem to know more about this man that one would expect. Take the nearly senile Professor Porter, and his grim and tired daughter, Jane Clayton. Tales are told and secrets are broken, and by the time the Man reveals himself, it would seem as though none in the grand For' Je Hall could ever be more changed.
