Bad luck comes in threes, or so they say. When she is widowed and made redundant, Evie Wright thinks she has faced the worst and hopes the fates will be kind to her. The thread of her husband's life cut short, the future of her unborn child still to be written, Evie accepts the line thrown to her by a job offer. As the live-in nanny to the widowed Simon and his daughter Livie, she thinks she can forget her loss by focusing on her new role. As Evie is forced to come to terms with the reality of her pregnancy and becoming a single mother, she realises that her husband's death may not have been as accidental as she thought and not everyone around her is what they seem.

A Story of Loss, Love, and the Light That Follows Darkness. Prologue The night the world ended, Sophia Lewis sat in her father's old armchair, gripping his worn-out leather jacket like it was a life raft. The funeral had been quiet-too quiet. The kind of quiet that suffocated. The kind that told her everything had changed. Her father, the man who had taught her how to fix a car, how to make the perfect cup of coffee, how to laugh even when the world was cruel, was gone. And with him, he had taken a piece of her. For months, Sophia wandered through life like a ghost in her own skin. Her friends faded away. Her dreams no longer seemed worth chasing. The world kept moving, but she was stuck-frozen in grief. Until he showed up.
