Within Magraan, a province plagued by its past mistakes, Mercenaries are hired to kill the monsters known as Artificial in order to survive. Nova, a young woman with an unknown past, and David Edwarn, a boy who's become her apprentice and closest friend, have made it their goal to hunt them all down in order to bring peace to their world. Yet, their six-year long career hasn't resulted in the monsters' extermination. Rather, the numbers are rumoured to be growing. Upon hearing theories that the Artificial are created in Taplica, Magraan's capital, Nova and David take on the mission of discovering whether or not it's true.
As they travel, they are sucked into a battle bigger than they imagined when they meet Carthy Von Alotise, a mysterious woman on the run. She tells the two Mercenaries of Taplica's Lord, a man named Dyterag, who took power in the same time of a bloody civil war that took place in the city. Believing that he and the Artificial are linked, Nova and David team up with Carthy to bring their form of justice to the corrupted leader. Meanwhile, the Lord and his court plan to rule over all of Magraan, and a group known as Scanterise plot to spark another civil war in order to banish the tyranny of their city.
As all three groups forge their individual paths to achieve their goals, it soon becomes clear just how connected they all are. The past bubbles to the surface, but are the forgotten events of Magraanian history doomed to repeat themselves once more?
