Three childhood friends, Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. They went through the academy together. After Sasuke got his curse mark he went off to train with Orochimaru. Everyone thought he betrayed the village but his two friends knew better. The plan was for all three to be trained by a Sannin and bring power to the leaf, and the only way for that to happen is for Sasuke to leave.
During Sasuke's absence things took a turn for the worse. The village banished Naruto and Sakura when they protested against the 'Kill Sasuke' order. The three meet up and join the akatsuki after certain circumstances.
