Recently, Greenhaven have been invaded by the Conquerors. Many Conquerors perished and a few of the Greencloaks deceased, defending Greenhaven. After the Conquerors fled and with the Great Beasts summoned, the Conquerors are after them.
Valarie and Amina have just reached age 11-12 and it's time to see if they're able to summon a spirit animal.
(This book doesn't really follow the plot of the series)

Animals of fur have the most heart or cunning in some cases. They are used to do physical work, such as build or fight, or own businesses. Animals of cold blood are said to have spiritual powers, such as telekinesis or telepathy. They tend to sit next to or help many people lead, and have done so for millennia. Then, there are unfortunate people who have no animal, or are animals of mite. They are seen as scum, and typically are homeless and do farm work. Eliza has grown up with people with no animal, as it ran in her family. She would be expected to have no animal too, and take whatever punishments or cruelties posed on them by the royal class.
