If they had to guess, it all began after Naruto became Hokage. It had been getting hard at home with Boruto's constant bickering and the stress of finishing the mountains of paperwork. Shikamaru was in the same situation with Temari who had been avoiding him since he began working late. The two friends decided fuck it and drank the night away. They didn't know it would end up with them in bed, never stopping to even think about their wives and children.
