They weren't called "genies." And they didn't live in bottles.

With the passage of the Mythic Rights Act shortly before her birth, Layla Matthews doesn't have to deny her djinniri heritage to exist in society - at least, not by law. She doesn't have to choose between her father's human family and her mother's djinn family - at least, not by law. She can change the world for the better, destroy the stereotypes that say her people walk around in pointed slippers and can be summoned into servitude with a rub of a lamp...

...at least, by law.

But laws don't change hearts on their own. And all lore has a grain of truth.

And life will never be easy for someone whose very existence is a stain on her ancestors' honor.

UPDATE: this book is getting published! While I'd love to keep the first draft fully on here, it's very different than the soon-to-be-published version (don't get me started on how problematic the first draft was). And by different, I mean different title, different synopsis and a lot of scenes have been either redacted or added. But how can they find happiness with each other when they are both broken beyond repair? AFTER She will never see him again. After seizing a chance to escape from her past, Layla knows she's not going to make the same mistake she did three years ago. Ariella's biggest desire in life has always been such a simple one. She wants to be 'normal.' Unfortunately, that one simple wish has never been within her grasp. Coming from a long line of witches is bad enough, but she's even more different than the rest of her family. The fact that no one will give her any answers to why she's so different doesn't help matters. Her entire existence is shrouded in secrets that everyone around her refuses to reveal. After a family tragedy, she moves to a new town, and she gets her first chance to at least pretend to be 'normal.' For the first time, she's allowed to leave the house and go to an actual school. She makes friends, and she develops her first crush, that's quickly followed by her second. She's finally living the normal teenage life she'd dreamed of, but it doesn't last. Everything she believed about herself and the world around her is changed in an instant. Family secrets come to light one after another, turning her entire world upside down in the process. She quickly realizes that sometimes ignorance really is bliss, and maybe she didn't really want to know the answers to the questions she'd always asked, especially when one of these truths causes people close to her to turn their backs on her without hesitation. Before she can even recover from the shock, she's thrust into a war that she hadn't even known existed. Loyalties will be tested. She'll have to choose sides between all of the people she's come to care about. Will she stand with her family, her new friends, or the two boys who both hold a piece of her heart? One thing is for sure. She'll have to let go of her dream of 'normal.'

Kingdom Hearts 1 (Female Sora AU) by egmwilson2016

The events of the Kingdom Hearts Saga if Sora and Kairi had been born the opposite gender. Soraya is an average tomboyish girl living on the Destiny Islands with her two best friends. Riku, who had been her closest friend her whole life (so close that they were practically siblings), and Kai, a sweet and creative boy who she had a slight crush on. One day, when Soraya was fourteen, her life changed forever when darkness invaded her home, and only she had the power to combat it. Little did she know that she was the prophesied Child of Destiny. ***I've loved Kingdom Hearts for years. I have all three main games. I've seen a couple genderbend fanfictions about it before, which were really good, but I thought I could elaborate more. Only Sora and Kairi are genderbent in this fanfiction. I do realize that Sora is a Japanese unisex name, but I associate it too much with a boy character to use it. Soraya is a Persian name that means "star cluster," which I feel fits perfectly, and Kai is a unisex name that means "sea" in Hawaiian, which also works well. There will be no POVs in this fanfiction. Kingdom Hearts is the property of Square Enix and Disney. Found inspiration for Kai's design on Google Images. (Copywrite is the last thing I want). I only own the genderbent versions of Sora and Kairi. So please enjoy my first entry in my genderbent Kingdom Hearts Saga. Also, I may include some more detailed information about some characters. Spoiler alert to all those who are not as savvy about the subject. (Although I do recommend seeing the YouTube channel "damo279" to hear his well researched "explained videos" on the Kingdom Hearts history and mysteries).

"You ungrateful bitch. I keep a roof over your head, and this is the thanks I get?" "You could have killed her," I retort, trying to muster up confidence that I don't possess. His smile is so wicked that it chills me to my core. "She ain't going to the cops. Hell, she'll probably be back here tomorrow." "You're a bastard," I whisper, tears filling my eyes.
