Riley Peterson never though such a day would come. When a not-so-much-of-a-random stranger turns up at her door at 5 in the morning, she pushes the feeling that she knows him away. Chaos, trauma, and destruction lived freely. With arguments alerting child protective services, and her home life causing her to act out at school, rumors about Riley Gaskin spread like wildfire when the town finds out her father was accidentally murdered. As the murder gets pinned on her, teachers feel unsafe with a convicted felon walking the halls. Running away from her reputation and violent household, Riley adapts to being homeless on the streets, hitchhiking, and making money however she can. But somehow she always finds her way back home. It isn't until years later, that Ryan gets a phone call from Riley, asking him to help her hide a dead body. Ryan is conflicted with running from the law with Riley, as well a putting his job as an officer on the line. Or even putting the love of his life, since he was a child, behind bars, for all of eternity. If following your heart gets you wanted by the police... do you still follow it?

"If you were really my best friend, you'd see that you were the only person I've ever wanted to be with. You've been dating everyone else while I'm just sitting around waiting for you to open your damn eyes!" I yelled at him as tears streamed down my cheeks. He looked at me with wide eyes, clearly confused. He then held a sympathetic look on his face when he saw how passionate I was about this entire situation. I can't believe he didn't realize all these years that he was the one I wanted to be with all along. "How was I supposed to know Riley? You didn't tell me shit!" He yelled back at me but still held his same sympathetic look. I shook my head at him, wiping my face as I backed away from him, stepping into a pile of snow in the process. There was already snow on ground but more snow had just started to fall from the sky. "Look, I have to go. My mom wants me home for dinner." I said turning on my heels and walking away towards my house. I didn't even bother looking back but I knew he was still standing there. I wondered if he'd run after me or if he'd sweep me off my feet like I always imagined but no, nothing. Just broken dreams and maybe even a broken friendship. *For hopeless romantics

Riley's either an angel or completely crazy - he hasn't decided which. But her offer is simple: give her until her birthday, just two months away, to prove life is worth something. After that, whatever he decides is up to him. He expects nothing. Instead, he gets midnight drives and way too many milkshakes. Gets random star quotes she's memorized just to make him roll his eyes. Gets stupid jokes that somehow make him laugh when he swore he'd forgotten how. But the closer they get, the more he sees through her smile to the shadows underneath. And as her birthday approaches, Ethan realizes keeping Riley alive might be the only thing worth living for.
