She tilted her head, eyes narrowing, a quiet challenge behind them. "You didn't ask if you could stay." He leaned back on his hands, the pose lazy but his gaze fixed on her, heavy enough to thicken the air between them. "You'd miss me if I left," he murmured, the words half a whisper-like he was testing the truth of it more than making a joke. She studied him for a long moment, really studied him, as if peeling back the bravado to see what sat underneath. Her eyes softened, but her scrutiny didn't fade. She leaned forward a fraction.
