"You'd miss me if I left," he murmured, the words half a whisper-like he was testing the truth of it more than making a joke. She studied him for a long moment, really studied him, as if peeling back the bravado to see what sat underneath. Her eyes softened, but her scrutiny didn't fade. She leaned forward a fraction.
