This is my unedited (as in I have not received critique from my teacher to edit it for a final, polished copy) IEW/EIL American Literature essay, modeled on Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography. The prompt, according to my textbook-
"Write a chapter in your personal autobiography in the style of Benjamin Franklin. Tell of an event or period of time in which you grew or were transformed in some way. Be sure to include humor and at least a few wise sayings."
So if you read this, I recommend reading the first chapter or so of his autobiography in order to grasp the context of this essay and better understand it. Critique is more than welcome!

First year of college! Your major is undecided and you're mostly focusing on your core classes right now. Now this isn't going to be your classic "love at first sight" spiel. I looked down at my freshly painted acrylic nails. My heart was racing and my palms were sweating. Although I was having a good time. It was time for me to get out with it. I needed to just spit it out. It's a question that's been lingering in my mind all night. It may ruin the night, but for the sake of my sanity I needed to ask Barron. Here goes nothing. "Barron, can I ask you a question?" I said as I twiddled my fingers together nervously. He nodded his head giving me his full attention. "What are we doing?" I asked softly. Barron rested his elbow on the table and shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know, I guess we are hanging out." He answered with no emotion. "Hanging out? You taking me to all these places is just us hanging out?" I said a little taken back. I was not prepared for that reply. I should have known. "What the fuck is your problem?" I asked my sworn enemy. "Have you lost your damn mind!" I scream at the top of my lungs. This bitch better answer me before I lose my shit. "HELLOO!"
