Centuries ago, the mages of Old Denea destroyed their civilisation to keep Mai, a half-blood prince, from inheriting the throne. Mai rescued the survivors from the remaining Devastation and brought them to Eurora. Since that time the refugees' descendants have toiled--ostracised and feared by the Eurans, enslaved by the strict dictates of the Magisterium that keep their powers in check--hoping to earn forgiveness from the now god-like Emperor Mai.

Rina, a young Denese woman leaves her home in Eurora's northern outpost, Amadore, and travels to the capital, Nebia, determined to find a way to convince Mai and the Magisterium to free her people before they rise up. But when she gets there, she uncovers a web of lies and deceit that threatens to trigger the demise of another nation.
