Daniel lost his parents when he was very young in an accident that took them both away from him. Doc Connors was a close friend of Daniel's family but lacked the qualifications to adopt Daniel. Later on a meteorite struck in the park and was given to Doc Connors to analyze. Daniel was helping out when a white and black goo came out of the meteor and found it's way to Daniel.
