On opening night of the stage play, Perkins' Ghost, at the Astor Theatre, a shocking murder had occurred, leaving many residents of the sleepy hollow to suspect that the murderer might have been that of the ghost of Simeon Perkins. With virtually no clues to follow, apart from the unexplained sightings of a Perkins look-alike, clairvoyants, fortune cookies, intuitions and a seemingly odd connection between the murder or murderer and the Kings Orange Rangers. Sergeant Hill wondered if the murderer would ever be found.
The little town of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, once booming with industry, had settled into itself. Ancient trees lined the streets, dappling patterns on the Colonial and Victorian homes. It was a quiet place, where retirees settled and where tourists went to soak up Canadian history or to sit alongside the Mersey River, watching as it glided by while listening to birds twittering in the trees. Nothing newsworthy had ever happened in Liverpool until a murder occurred.

***COMPLETED***So get this... We've been living in a dystopian nightmare for 10 years now. Grandpa Alfred says it's the older generation's fault--well duh! To make matters worse, Bell, my twin sister, contracted "The Wasting." No doubt she caught it by helping the kids in the Forbidden Zones. That's where all the mutant freaks live. Not just your usual freaks but kids with missing limbs, half a face, twisted spines... My witch of a mother thinks it's from the nuke plants leaking after the purple lights lit up the skies. The preggo's babies turned into monsters. Due to Bell's bleeding heart she only has a month to live. Grandpa says he knows this invisible guy with a cure, (yeah right... what you've been sniffing Grandpa?) He's disappeared and so close to "Recycling" age. Now it's up to me and only me, Izzy Quest, a freaked out teen from Brooklyn, to save my dying twin sister. You may have guessed by now, I'm not the save-the-day-sort--Bell is. She's the sweet, honest, dependable, pretty twin. Don't believe me? Ask my lunatic of a mother. "You look like Bell; try acting like her." If Bell had to save me, she'd be all organized with sticky notes and a compass. Me? What do I have but OCD, a short fuse and a cynical attitude. Oh, but I can run--fast. I can outrun any boy in my school. Well, when there were schools. As of today, all schools are closed indefinitely. Thanks evil, New Regime! (Bell wants me to tell you our story is in 3rd person and not first person--whatever that means...) Find out what the Quest sisters are up to next! Read: "Escape From Fat Camp"

Eleven short stories, posted one story at a time: Two little girls, in two different eras, yearning for their parents. A shy girl in a new country. An uncertain woman dancing back into life after the death of a spouse. A thrilling short short. Mother and son argue over what is dignity, what value her life. A creepy little short that won an honourable mention in the Hart House Short Story Contest. The bureaucrat and his ever-so-busy day. A party that glitters and excludes ones who don't fit. A daughter rebels. A mother and her youngest, a conflict without end, that only death can solve? Murder stalks the homeless in Toronto's innocent streets. I hope you enjoy these stories! The ePub and Kindle versions include a bonus romance, written in 1919 by my grandmother, about two people who have to face danger to find each other. There's a story in that: My mother’s sister and mother liked to write poetry. My mother’s mother was a stellar speller and a killer Scrabble player. But I had no idea until recently that as an adolescent she had written and submitted stories for publication. I don’t think her queries were successful. And it wasn’t long before she got married and started riding the Wall of Death as a living with her husband. And so in honour of that century-ago effort of hers, I reproduced in the ePub, as she typed it errors and all (or what I suppose to be errors as grammar is different between countries and eras), the story my mother – her daughter – found recently in an old envelope postmarked from London 6:15 pm 23 SP 19 (23 September 1919) to Miss D.
