When portals showed up around the world and gave access to a more technologically advanced Earth, the government created a group known as "Pathfinders" to explore the resources of the Other Side. Exploitation, however, led the Other Side to counterattack, resulting in the so-called Great War that wiped out almost all the Earth's resources. The portals were controlled to prevent the passage to the Other Side and the Pathfinders were disconnected.
Max Powell is a former Pathfinder who makes a living hunting for remains of machines from the Other Side to sell. Victim of an accident that deformed her body and killed her platoon, including her girlfriend Lisa, she receives a message from Lt. Reynolds saying that Lisa is not only alive on the Other Side, as she may also be victim of a grand plan that aims to exterminate the Earth once for all. Lt. The Untouchables booby-trapped the Earth with artifacts believed to be creations of Earth's early civilizations. These machines of destruction are responsible for the blazing heat that is incrementally destroying the Earth. What causes complications for Laura's progress is her growing attraction to Merc, oddly because he's as void of a conscience as she is. She needs to figure out if Merc knows where the machines are so she can shut them down. Merc in turn, needs to stop Laura from finding the machines to keep Earth on its path to ruination. They are more powerful than they are letting on, and have no qualms about killing the other.
