When portals showed up around the world and gave access to a more technologically advanced Earth, the government created a group known as "Pathfinders" to explore the resources of the Other Side. Exploitation, however, led the Other Side to counterattack, resulting in the so-called Great War that wiped out almost all the Earth's resources. The portals were controlled to prevent the passage to the Other Side and the Pathfinders were disconnected.
Max Powell is a former Pathfinder who makes a living hunting for remains of machines from the Other Side to sell. Victim of an accident that deformed her body and killed her platoon, including her girlfriend Lisa, she receives a message from Lt. Reynolds saying that Lisa is not only alive on the Other Side, as she may also be victim of a grand plan that aims to exterminate the Earth once for all. Lt. 2,218 Earth won't stop heating up, normal temperatures average 135°. With imminent destruction looming, someone has to figure out what's causing planetary chaos. LAURA, a descendant of the Originators, has always known she owns this puzzle, this responsibility. Laura has internalized this lifelong burden; in turn, she's developed a dissociative disorder she's effectively kept secret from everyone. Laura's leading the effort to solve this climate crisis, with her team of global environmental, atmospheric scientists for the U.S. company, H20, Corporation. Just when Earth's temperatures are beginning to normalize, the barometer starts climbing back up. Laura believes the human key to the Earth's weather crisis, is the team's newest member, MERC. Only he's not human and he's a charismatic psychopath. Merc's a first generation Originator, who's covertly working with the Untouchables. The Untouchables booby-trapped the Earth with artifacts believed to be creations of Earth's early civilizations. These machines of destruction are responsible for the blazing heat that is incrementally destroying the Earth. What causes complications for Laura's progress is her growing attraction to Merc, oddly because he's as void of a conscience as she is. She needs to figure out if Merc knows where the machines are so she can shut them down. Merc in turn, needs to stop Laura from finding the machines to keep Earth on its path to ruination. They are more powerful than they are letting on, and have no qualms about killing the other.

However, despite all this, there has always been something... off about her. She's always watching. Always listening. And always seems to be in the right place at the right time... A true tale of love that only just barely SCRATCHES the surface of what is to come for the galaxy. After all this is just BOOK 1 "Sometimes... Love is worth dying for."

Five co-workers and a guide struggle with a creature, a live relic from the past and from another dimensional plane. The creature is simultaneously lizard and birdlike, while also having anthropoidic characteristics. Once upon a time, this alien race made contact with a lost human Civilization in the region. The two races initially made an alliance, but the greed of some of the humans caused a war to erupt. The discovery and cursory inspection of the cave by one of the characters results in an impromptu, amateur tour. During the journey through the cave one of the co-workers, through a combination of stubbornness, curiosity and willfulness, becomes separated. He stumbles upon a cache of interesting artifacts inside of an oddly inhuman room with alien technology. It is in these confines where he unlocks the being whose last memories of human interaction are still freshly stinging its memory. The group grapples through the tenuous caves trying to escape the creature's vengeful wrath. The ensuing mad flight from the cave to relative safety results in a battle for survival.

Joined by his new partner, Jenna Jones, he pursues a secretive manhunt for the Soldiers Of The New World, an underground E.H. crime organization that has a hand in all that is illegal, and their mysterious leader: String, who, seemingly, has eyes and ears everywhere. While Adlet and Jenna intend on doing this by the books, their unsavory past with two of String's captains may muddy their judgement, or, more accurately, it already has. As String's ambitions grow beyond just controlling the city's underbelly Adlet and Jenna are forced to take action with an ally he did not desire. While prejudice against E.H.s reaches it's peak because of a horrific tragedy, the Soldiers of the New World waste no time to expand their reach and rally for their cause of taking over the city. Adlet goes to the edge of sacrificing everything and back again. On the way, betrayal awaits at every corner.
