Roger Rathbone is something of a double agent. He has acted as a friend and as sympathetic to both Klaus Mikaelson and Mikael. It was because of the Mikaelsons that Roger became a vampire in the first place, and though he likes immortality, it doesn't mean he's fond of them. 

 Roger follows the Mikaelsons to Mystic Falls and there he meets Esther, the Mikaelson matriarch. From their first meeting, there is something about her he finds enchanting. But she seems too busy with her plans to give Roger any real attention. However, they could be surprised by their feelings in the end.
