Benjamin Trumbauer enjoys his life in Kentucky. Though he lives in a run down neighborhood, he dreams of becoming an artist someday. He's surrounded by his friends, an unusual bunch that he's grown very close to throughout his life. Everything's alright.

Then, his entire world is shattered when he and his friends are suddenly taken away from their homes onto a journey that will change the universe forever.

Guided by a shapeshifting dragon named Gervalt and a omen that spells doom if not answered in time, Ben has to learn aeons old magic, the truth of creatures once believed to be mythical, and his place in a universe that's on the verge of destruction.
