Although plagiarism isn't typically seen as a criminal offense in the legal sense, any effort to obtain academic credit through deception is subject to severe academic consequences that could result in expulsion.
Plagiarists can be sued outside of the "real world," where they may also face failure and embarrassment.
Let me state it very simply. Let's say that you and a friend are both trying to win someone's heart. Imagine that after writing a wonderful love poem, your friend duplicates it and sends it to your potential love interest before you do. The new friend wins the admiration of
