The doctor stared at her, his face grim and his eyes severe. Lorelei looked between him and his assistant, a ferret looking fellow with big eyes and even bigger spectacles. "I don't understand," she said softly, silently pleading with the men to be clear.
"I'm sorry Mrs. Rose, but it would seem-" the doctor paused to lick his lips. "It would seem that you have forgotten your life from the past five years."
Lorelei could hardly believe it. How could it be true, when she knew the man before her. Doctor Swann had been her physician when she was pregnant with George. She remembered him, she remembered his assistant, Matthew, as well.
"While memory loss is a new theory, many patients seemed to regain their memory after a time," Doctor Swann spoke gently, as if she was a deer and he a hunter and afraid to startle her into a run. "With time, I'm sure your memories will return."
She remembered Kincaid, but when she had opened her eyes after the fall, the two children leaning over her had been as much a mystery as her tumble. A feeling of despair settled low in her belly.
