Four stories shared on one, long, Louisiana summer evening. Each story told by an elderly, African-American, World War I veteran, to a twenty-five year old man whose neglect of his past and family leads to him not knowing that his own father is on his death bed. The four elderly men are close friends of his father, and each one strives to enlighten the ignorant young man in some way.
