In the North, words are not veiled by sarcasm and flowers. There is steel in a Northerner's tongue, a steel forged from the coldest of winters. But not even a Northerner can withstand the danger that fast approaches.

All Riselda Fisher can think about is the approaching long winter, a cold so harsh as to make a man forget his manhood. Without a father and with a drug-addled mother, she alone must fend for her sister. But there is no food. The Fractured Empire is constantly at war and rations are meager. Emperor Valer rules by fear and corruption, enslaving his subjects, forcing folk like Riselda to live off scraps.
