The Aftermath at Mount Massive is part one of a three part series called Survivors. This part is done. It is a fanfic for the game Outlast, set after the first game/DLC. However, you don't have to know much about the game to jump in.
This story follows an independent journalist named Miles Upshur who received an email from a whistleblower, Waylon Park, who worked at Murkoff Psychiatric Systems: Mount Massive. The hospital was supposed to be run as a charity, offering help to those who could not pay, or for those who other hospitals wouldn't accept. However, things weren't as they seemed and Murkoff was using the hospital as a cover for a laboratory where they were performing experiments on humans. The end result of such experiments was the creation of Project Walrider, a bio-nanite parasite that lives inside a human body.
Miles stumbles into the facility during a security breach and riot. He manages to survive the night but in doing so becomes infected with the nanites, becoming the new host for Project Walrider.
The Aftermath of Mount Massive is about Miles coming to terms with what being the Host means for both his humanity and future.
Content Warning: This fic contains blood, gore, cannibalism, a suicide attempt, mild body horror, and language. If you are sensitive to any of those things I suggest not reading.

Australia was once a country with Carnivores and Herbivores coexisting with the Omnivores. Humans, considered class Omnivores, came out with a strange pathogen. During the first week, humans were infected with a virus showing cannibalistic behaviour only to their own species. Biting. Eating the flesh of ones own species. Violent behaviour. It baffled scientists at it's cause, wondering what it is. Animals however, were invisible to the infected Omnivores. Humans were ignoring the Herbivores and Carnivores. Until, they too got infected. Somehow they did. Whatever caused it, they can see both human and animal as their prey. Even if their prey are carnivores. The army lost control within the first month. Airports shut down in areas nearby, while flights didn't dare to go back to Australia. No other country was willing to take Refugees. But one showed compassion and opened it's doors. Waylon Park, and his colleague Travis Stewart, both work together to gather enough evidence to expose Murkoff Corporations. But as soon as the email goes through, things go sideways and they're thrown into Mount Massive Asylum, giving them a new objective. Escape the Asylum. I also want to point out that the SA themes within this are non-romanticized.
