Udumalpet city is one of the famous summer resorts in Tamil Nadu.   The city was known as "UDUMALAI" and due to its rural ecosystem and later added the name Pettai.     Now the name is modified as "UDUMALAIPETTAI" in Tamil.   The city is surrounded by the Western Ghats on three sides.  The average altitude of the town is 1208 feet above sea level.

Udumalaipettai is an Industrial town with fabric, paper and kind of industries located.  There are paper manufacturing plants located alongside the Amaravathi River.  There are plenty of windmill installations due to the location of the town across the Palghat Gap.  Areas surrounding Udumalpet are agricultural lands.
