Not all of these are true, so don't look at them for hints to the books travel. 
This is something we thought of whilst we are on Hiatus, and in between books. Currently they do have their device fixed, but this is because we have some Plot details to work out as we enter the last leg of the book. 
That's right, we're leaving the expedition.
