Kokichi Ouma always liked to think of himself as the Ultimate Liar-- of course, being the Ultimate Supreme Leader was much better anyway, but still. Most would even say his entire existence is based on lies, or at the very least he's been surrounded by them.
So when he finds out the trustworthy Shuichi Saihara is the mastermind, he proposes a deal-- he'll lie to everyone and lead away from any possibility of Shuichi being the mastermind, and in return, safety from the killings.
Who would've thought he'd toss his own plan of stabbing Shuichi in the back right out the window himself? Guess being the mastermind's accomplice is more fun than he thought.
