"...We welcome our falling sister, Aran Morrison." There was quiet applause. The old woman nods and begins to shuffle away. I start to protest her as the room returns to chattering, but then my mouth closes.

"Hi, Aran. I'm Jaymauhny Kamin; call me Jay-Jay." A short African girl says. She seems very young, but also very skinny, her traditional garb almost falling off. "Welcome! You're lucky you were saved, ya know, not everybody is."

"Saved?"

"Taken to the Place of Late Suicide Adolescents, of course."

Aran Morrison was put where she didn't want to be. Nothing has ever gone right for her. Mother left her at the age of seven; father's been in and out of jail for drugs and violence; sister is a slut and brings it home; her family beats her and screams at her for things that aren't her fault; everyone at school finds her anorexia and cuts hilarious.... Everything is absolutely terrible and no one cares. No one cares about her; she is worthless. Why stay in a world like this?
