Years of abuse from her new 'guardians' almost drove her mad- until at 22 she was taken by Hydra and spent the next year the subject of inhumane experiments, causing her to release her powers. She made her escape, and the Avengers discovered her collapsed in the snow after the Hydra base exploded. The team were faced with a difficult choice to make in order to save her life.
