I was late. 

I knew the consequences but he hadn't given me enough time. He knew I wouldn't be able to finish the job within a week.  Creating paintings that are worth anything will take patience; but what do I get? 

One week. 

One goddamn week to create a masterpiece that is worth thousands! 

He'll be here any second now demanding that the painting be handed over through the hatch, the only opening to the outside other than the door that is always barred to me and the cracks in the ceiling where slivers of light find their way through . 

There's no point in trying to finish now anyway; I was doomed from the moment he shoved the canvas through the hatch with a one-week stamp on the back screaming out at me in bold red letters.  Hopefully he's in a good mood today because then maybe I'll get away with no food for a couple of days or possibly a few weeks with no fresh towels for cleaning.

A girl could wish.
