This first story line brings Batman into conflict with sadistic and brutal crime lord, Black Mask. The most powerful man in the city and ruler of Gotham's criminal underworld, Black Mask has vast wealth and resources, eliminated his opposition and is consolidating his power. Upon returning to Gotham City after his training, Bruce Wayne also learns that the venomous Scarecrow is planning to use a deadly and dangerous new drug called "Vertigo" into Gotham City, spreading fear and panic throughout the population. With Scarecrow and Black Mask forming an alliance to corrupt Gotham, Bruce must use his wits to defeat them. Supporting key characters include Alfred Pennyworth, Commissioner James Gordon, Lucius Fox, Carmine Falcone, and Vicki Vale.
