Welcome to Trench.

In the lowest reaches of a barren world of grey and neon, there is a city called Dema, surrounded by walls and controlled by nine Bishops. There, children and adults of all ages are taught to perform with efficiency and obedience. There is no way out - but why would they want to leave? They have shelter, food, clothes, and most importantly, consistency. 

Two young men dream of something outside of Dema. They are forced to keep quiet about their dreams and dim the light in their eyes, for if they are caught with thoughts like these, they will surely be published. It would be easier to stay and conform, like everyone else. But still, myths of a land outside of Dema and a mysterious band called the Banditos occupy their minds until they know they must escape.

A fairly literal and entirely fictional interpretation of the music videos and some lyrics from Twenty Øne Piløts' new album Trench, as well as Clancy's journal.

It's the year 2050, and the country that was once known as America has closed off all of its borders and has now been named Dema. The states as vanished, but now Dema is split into nine different sanctions, or provinces, each led by its own Bishop. The leader of Dema, Nicolas Bourbaki, or Nico as everyone calls him, runs Dema with the help of the bishops. His army, the niner's are the police force that enforces the strict rules that Nico has placed in the country. It was a harsh transition, but ever since Dema has been running smoothly. Nico created a band on popular culture. This includes music, art, movies, media, and much more. He created job assignments, so there was a regulation and who does what job, so the country can be successful. If you got chosen to be a creator, you were the one who gets to create the art or media, that can be listened to by the listeners. The listeners are what once were called celebrities, the top 1%. It's quiet in Dema without music and art, but this allows for focus on the jobs and the raises the success rate of Dema. But what happens when a banned creator starts his own secret rebellious group?

Dema/Trench Lore, diving into everyday life in Trench with the Banditos, on their path to free Dema. Lita and the rest of the Banditos are led by the Torchbearer, Josh. Their mission is to liberate Dema from the Bishops, but they first need to figure out how to expand the rebellion within the city. In the meantime, the Banditos task themselves with helping more citizens escape the city and adjust to life in Trench. When mysterious letters are discovered throughout the city, some citizens begin to question their commitment to Vialism, and even the Bishops themselves. Nobody knows who this 'Clancy' person is, but the Torchbearer knows how valuable such an ally could be to their cause, and he's determined to get them on their side. *Authors note* This story follows the canon timeline as closely as I'm able, starting from just before HeavyDirtySoul and ending after the events of Levitate. If all goes well, there will be a sequel that delves into what the Banditos do during the SAI era and beyond. I've based several of my characters on real-life people, as well as borrowed some names. Lita is based on Debby Ryan, and Hadley is based on Jenna Joseph. I changed their names for creative reasons, but I didn't want there to be any confusion about who they are meant to be. One night, the Banditos are all by the fire, singing and chatting. Clancy catches sight of a figure walking towards the camp. In gray Dema citizen sweats. With nobody accompanying it. It's trying to walk up over the hill towards the camp. Nobody had ever seen a Dema citizen make it to the camp by themself. Then Clancy sees you collapse against the hill, and he springs into action, sprinting towards you to help while the rest of the Banditos watch with caution.

Both of us thought that once we were out of DEMA, we would be out of it for good, but little did know that along the way, we would uncover many hidden secrets about the origins of DEMA, as well as its citizens. We also didn't realize how many others had been wanting to escape as well, which caused them to work together to form a group of rebel escapees, the Banditos.
