Nova Sallow has always been different. It's kind of hard to fit in when two different kinds of magic flow through your veins, the product of a forbidden love of times past. Her mother and father, from opposing magic races; her mother in exile, her father barely clinging on to a leadership role, Nova somewhere between, always longing to set foot on the beautiful city on the horizon.

But when her mother's old family appears, asking her mother for information she claims not to know, Nova is forced to flee deep into the streets of the forbidden city with her father, whose magic does not match hers and suspicions arise. But these people are human, and within a community not hers, Nova finds more of a community than she ever has before.

And meanwhile, outside of the hidden world's walls, trouble is brewing, her mother is on the run, and half-blood Nova is the target of it all.

If only she could get her poor little dog Atticus to behave.
