While the Branch was still grey, everyone thought that he just hated music, hugs and fun in general. And that was true, but what nobody knew was that Branch had a deep, dark secret. Every once in a while, a dark force would merge from inside of Branch and takeover. He could see what he was doing but he was never able to stop it.

After the whole fiasco (AKA the movie Trolls), Branch thought that the force was gone.
