I'm really proud to write this story as an entry to the #planetorplastic campaign with National Geographic. I had a National Geographic subscription as I grew up. I have fond memories of the stacks of yellow spines in our bookcase and flicking through the pages. It really helped form my view and philosophy on the planet, people and our role in it from a young age.

This is something very different from what you would usually see from my writing - this is my personal experience with freediving and how it brought me closer to the Ocean and helped reveal our role in it.

I will preface all of this with the sacred rules of freediving; if you want to try it (and I suggest you do!) contact a professional instructor for training and you should never, ever, ever freedive alone.
