A Second Skin is what we call our uniforms, clothing and armor. I wear a Second Skin. I used to be an ordinary girl, but during that time I was extremely anti-social (I still am though, but for different reasons). When I turned twelve, I realized I could talk to animals and so did another boy, named Alex. We perfected our skill and learned the language of animals by mimicking their body language and sounds. The government found out about us and gave rights to a demented scientist, stating that he could experiment on us in whichever way he deemed fit. The Tower is something the government built to keep Alex and I inside. And just to be sure that we aren't going try and escape, they have a way of tracking us and that is to put cuff around our right wrist. This cuff electrocutes us and burns our skin on contact. The scar that is left behind on us is always the same, the letter T to the exponent of 5 on the back of our wrist. The government doesn't even know what is going behind those steel walls. The scientist who has control of the Tower didn't tell us his name, instead we are to refer to him as the Warden. This isn't the first time we've been in the Tower nor will it be the last.

INCAPABLE - BOOK I: THE FALLEN
ONCE my mom told me that we, as humans, only fear what we do not know and that that is the sole reason for violence. We do not know what is to come of something, so in retaliation we immediately fight it off before we can ever find out; before we can ever see if there is any beauty in it. My mom is gone now. Along with any sanity we as a people have left. The year is 2193, and the world is at war. We, humans, are at war with each other only because of what we are and what we can do. We fear what we do not know, thus all we know is ignorance. The government, our democracy, our people and our world have fallen. Nothing good ever comes from being afraid of the abnormalities of others, especially when those abnormalities are amazing. The truth is, none of us are normal. Everyone's definition of normality is different, making it humanly impossible for anyone to ever accomplish the craved label of "normal". Then again, everything we have grown capable of was once described as humanly impossible. By those standards none of us are human. Not even me. Never is a Mirror
I used to think the worst thing a place could do was keep you. Never taught me different. It lets you choose-and then makes sure the choice chooses you back. By daylight I work the door at Afterglow, a club of glass and iron and music that keeps its own kind of time. By night I count breaths, watch the mirrors, and pretend the soft diamond of salt over my heart is just an old scar. I don't say the word for what I can do under my breath. I don't look too long at the water. I don't answer when the ticking starts. Once, there was an island that ran on names, ledgers, and the right song at the wrong hour. There was a boy who arrived like a reflection and loved me the way a snare loves a sparrow-beautifully, relentlessly. There were rules disguised as jokes, games that tasted like devotion, and a crown that was really a lie if you listened closely enough. Mercy wore resin. Truth tasted like iron. And every wish I whispered came back with teeth. Now the past keeps surfacing-through windows, through music, through the mouths of strangers who don't know what they're asking. I wanted quiet. A pause. Something that didn't bleed me. Instead I got choices, and the kind of love that uses your yes as a lever. If I go back, it won't be because I'm brave. If I stay, it won't be because I'm safe. Either way, the mirror is already looking.

"Who's out there?" One of the men yelled. Of course only silence met them. I remained quiet and waited for the group to start moving again. "Maybe it was just an animal." Someone whispered. The person, who I assumed was the captain of the small squad, signaled for them to walk again. They clearly showed fear as they kept going; brandishing their weapons to guard themselves with. "Two are holding lanterns. I'll tell you when you're too close to them." I heard my friend whisper in my ear. I followed the men as I picked up another branch and waited for the right time to break it. They continued to walk through the forest, turning their heads in every direction as if an animal might lunge at them and rip their throats out. I guess in a way I was going to do that. "Go back a few feet." My friend whispered. I carefully distanced myself from the group and waited. "Where is she?" I quickly snapped the stick as soon as he finished asking the question. They stopped and two soldiers raised their lanterns to shine its light in the darkness. I quickly hid behind a tree before both of them turned where I was. A low frustrated growl came from one of the men, "The girl's playing with us. She's out here following our every move." How paranoia can cloud the mind. At nine years old, Silver decided to leave her village for the forest. Since then, she's been hunted; everyday is a fight for her life, every breath she takes could be her last, but she's determined to stay alive.
