A handsome young History lecturer, Paolo di Priapi, takes up a post at Gypesyke University. Paolo likes to take a “hands on” to helping students, especially struggling female students. Local girl Tina, who in earlier times might have called a “demi monde,” is keen to make something of herself and, in her struggle to escape the limited horizons imposed by circumstance, she enrols on a History course at the university. Paolo soon finds himself on the fringes of an alternative Gypeswyke, a twilight world of drugs and prostitution that exists in some of the town’s shadier bars and on the streets around the football ground, one that Tina wants to escape. Here he encounters Tim Crown, a supermarket worker who has a keen interest in the local street girls, and The Record Collector, a transient character who has a half-formed idea to burgle the outbuildings of a nearby farm which house the extensive record collection of recently deceased legendary disc jockey, Jim Poole. Inevitably, Tina and Paolo’s paths cross, and she is soon enjoying more one-to-one tuition than the other students. Meanwhile, Paolo hatches a plan in which he and The Record Collector can help each other. During the course of Tina’s first term at university, the attention of the world’s media is turned on the town as several “working girls” go missing and bodies start to turn up in the surrounding countryside.
