Er zijn aangenamere plekken te bedenken om de nacht door te brengen dan op een kerkhof.
Toch stond daar een eenzame gedaante in de duisternis, even roerloos als de grafzerken die hem omringden.
Het tafereel werd plotseling in beweging gebracht door een kille herfstbries. Overal ritselden struiken en vanuit de kerktoren galmden omineuze klanken. Dichtbij schraapten dorre takken langs het toegangshek alsof ze een harp aan het bespelen waren.
Dit naargeestige schouwspel zou menigeen doen huiveren, maar Nathan was niet meer in staat om angst te voelen. Angst ervaar je wanneer je bang bent om iets te verliezen; hij had alles al verloren wat hem dierbaar was.
