Deep in the woods behind her off the grid grandparents' property a tomboyish girl hears a scream and follows it to a pond thick with red algae where an act of heroism leads to her getting transported through dimensions and lets her become part of a fantastic world where humans are only mentioned in legends.

Humans are described as otherworldly beings that can sow either miracles or destruction among the races living there.
