Ellie is a sixteen year old with a mother and brother, Conner. Her father walked out on the family soon after Conner was born and has dropped off the face of the earth. A tragedy causes her and Conner to be put into the foster care system, where they are met with multiple challenges.
For Ellie, one of those challenges is a boy, Jacob, also known as Jake. He acts like a typical jock but holds a mysterious aura since he tends to keep to himself, only interacting with the other girls in the house if it was absolutely necessary. He is the foster mom's son so he, unfortunately, must be tolerated.
But one day, the doorbell rings. Ellie, being the only one near the door at the moment, quickly strides in its direction and turns the knob. Little did she know that this action would change her life forever.
"Hello dear, it's nice to see you again. May I come in?"
