His childhood friend- and tutor for college- Mia Walker accompanied him on the Queen's Gambit with a promised two days for research in one of the nearby islands. Three days into their journey, the Gambit sunk and they became stranded in the open ocean until they reached the island of Lian-Yu. 

An island designed for torture, it seemed. 

Five years later, they return to Starling City with their own agenda. Oliver covers his absences well, but it's harder for her.
