Lewis Carnicle was leading a happy carefree life until he turned sixteen. On his sixteenth birthday he got a call from the doctors saying he had the "Black Blood syndrome". From that day onwards he knew he would be devastated. What he mistook for depression was actually even worse.

How exactly would Lewis deal with the syndrome knowing that "He will now be a destructive force for everything he has built."

Caleb is definitely a troubled child. Alone, with nothing going for him, he attempts to take his own life but fails at his first attempt. He desperately wants to try again but is put under constant supervision, especially by his new doctor, Dr Palmer. He starts back at college full time, and becomes ever closer with Stephanie, the only person whom he feels that he can trust. When his own father attacks his mother, Caleb begins to think that the police are on to him, trying to unravel his past, thinking that they have realised what happened to cause him to try to commit suicide. However, they are just trying to build a case against his father. In desperation, Caleb tried to reach out to Dr Palmer, against the advice of his mother. As his life spirals out of control, Dr Palmer makes him realise that the only way he can carry on is to come clean and reveal his secret. In a shocking final twist, everything is revealed to be not what it seems, and Caleb finds out that he will be ok, no matter what happens to him.
